This essay explores the lessons that can be learned from Bandura’s Bobo Doll experiments. In these experiments, children were divided into three groups and exposed to different kinds of treatment in order to study how they internalize aggression.
The first group was exposed to an adult who was violent towards the doll. This group exhibited significant increases in aggressive behavior when compared to a control group who had not been exposed to such an example. The second group witnessed an adult behave aggressively towards the doll but then be punished for their actions, while the third witnessed an adult behave aggressively towards the doll before being praised for their actions.
The results of this experiment demonstrate that people learn more through modeling than direct instruction or punishment. This has been termed “social learning theory” and it forms the basis of much of our understanding today about how we learn from others.
Bandura’s experiments show that people are not only influenced by direct instruction or punishment, but can also be influenced by others who serve as role models. They suggest that if children see adults behaving in a certain way, they will often copy those behaviors even if they know it is wrong to do so. This suggests that there must be adequate supervision for children and that parents should set a good example for their kids.
In conclusion, Bandura’s Bobo Doll experiment teaches us many lessons about social learning and the importance of modelling behaviour for children. It shows us that we need to pay attention to who we are around and the kind of behaviour we are displaying in order to set a good example for the younger generations. It also reminds us that punishing people for their actions does not necessarily stop them from recreating those same actions in the future. Therefore, positive reinforcement should be used more often when teaching children, as it can help them internalize better behaviours than merely being punished. Finally, this experiment highlights how important it is to provide adequate supervision for our kids, so they do not learn bad habits from others without proper guidance.
